Engerl-Bengerl: Secret Santa the Austrian way
For anyone organizing Engerl-Bengerl with family, at work, in a club or in a class: rules everyone knows up front, ideas for small surprises and a plan so the reveal leaves more than a memory.
The short answer
In Engerl-Bengerl, everyone secretly draws a name. For that person they are the Engerl, the little angel, and give them presents: usually small surprises over a few days in Advent, or one wrapped gift on a shared evening. Only at the reveal does the Bengerl find out who their Engerl was. Agree on a gift limit, the time frame and the date of the reveal beforehand. You can draw the names for free on our Secret Santa page, no account needed.
Checklist
Before: group, rules, draw
Most Engerl-Bengerl mix-ups happen because the rules only live in one person's head. Settle them before anyone draws.
- Decide who is taking part, and double-check that everyone really wants to. Anyone who'd rather not should be able to opt out without explaining.
- Agree on a limit for gifts, both for the main present and for each small surprise. A modest limit takes away the pressure to outdo everyone.
- Pick a format: one gift on a shared evening, or several small surprises over a few days, for example one week of Advent.
- Set the date and place of the reveal. At work the holiday party is a natural fit; with family, an evening before Christmas Eve.
- Draw the names so nobody gets themselves. With our free lots this works on a phone or on paper, and the names stay in your browser.
- Have everyone fill in a wish card: what they'd enjoy and what they'd rather not get. That way no gift ends up unwanted.
During: give in secret, reveal together
Whether it runs for a week or a single evening, the secret only holds if everyone plays along a little.
- Leave small surprises where they'll be found: on a desk, in a mail slot, at a door. A short unsigned note adds to the mystery.
- Small surprises don't have to cost anything: a favorite cookie, a homemade riddle, a coffee that's already waiting.
- At the reveal, each Bengerl guesses first who their Engerl was. Only then does the Engerl step forward.
- Put a QR code on the table so everyone can add their photos of the guessing and unwrapping to one shared album, no app and no sign-up.
- On a TV or projector, the photos can play during the evening: as a slideshow on every plan, as a live photo wall from Spotlight.
After: say thanks and keep the photos
After the reveal, the photos are usually scattered across many phones. A few minutes the next day are enough to bring them together.
- Remind the group the next day to upload their last photos.
- Hide anything in the album that isn't meant for everyone. Guest photos are visible right away to everyone with access, unless you have turned on approval before publishing in the event settings.
- Create a short recap with music from selected photos and send it to everyone as a thank-you.
- Note what worked and what didn't, such as the gift limit or the time frame. Next year's Engerl-Bengerl will be quicker to organize.

Frequently asked questions
What is Engerl-Bengerl?
Engerl-Bengerl is the Austrian name for Secret Santa. Everyone secretly gives presents to someone else. Who was whose Engerl stays a secret until the reveal.
Who is the Engerl and who is the Bengerl?
The Engerl gives, the Bengerl receives. Because everyone draws one name, each person is the Engerl for one person and the Bengerl for another.
How long does Engerl-Bengerl last?
That's up to you. Some groups exchange one gift on a shared evening; others spread small surprises over a few days or all of Advent. What matters is that everyone knows the same time frame.
How big should the gift limit be?
Small enough that everyone can join without thinking twice. At work and in class, a small limit that is the same for everyone is common. Agree on it before the draw, not after.
Can you draw Engerl-Bengerl names online?
Yes. On our Secret Santa page you enter the names, your browser does the draw, and nobody gets themselves. Print the lots or send each person their own link by WhatsApp or email. The names are not sent to EventDrop.
How do we collect the photos from the reveal?
Create an album and put the QR code on the table. Everyone scans it with their phone camera and uploads their photos, no app and no account. The lots don't depend on it and stay free.
